What we can unlock
“Locked” means four or five different things, and which one you have decides what happens next. Bring the phone in and we will identify it at the counter.
IF IT IS AN IPHONE OR IPAD
iCloud / Activation Lock
Apple ties the device to an Apple ID, so it stays locked to that account through a factory reset. It is a theft deterrent working exactly as designed, which is why it is also the case where proof of ownership matters most. Bring the device and your proof of purchase and we will tell you honestly what is possible for your model — this one genuinely depends on the device and the situation. More on what to do with an iCloud-locked iPhone.
IF IT IS AN ANDROID
Google FRP (Factory Reset Protection)
The Android equivalent: after a reset the phone demands the Google account that was signed in beforehand. Same principle as Activation Lock, same honest answer — it depends on the device and on being able to show the phone is yours.
EITHER WAY, WHOEVER MADE IT
Carrier or network lock
The original meaning of an unlocked phone: the handset is tied to one provider and refuses another provider’s SIM. This is the one most people mean, it is the most straightforward, and it is what makes a phone usable on any Canadian network or on a local SIM abroad.
Forgotten passcode or password
Different from a carrier lock, though searches conflate the two constantly. Here the phone is yours and on the right network — you simply cannot get past the lock screen. What is possible depends on the model and on whether the data needs to survive, which is the first thing we will ask you.
IMEI checks
Every phone carries a unique 15-digit IMEI — dial *#06# to see yours. It identifies the exact handset, tells us which carrier it was locked to, and shows whether it has been reported lost or stolen. Any honest unlock starts by checking it, and we check it in front of you.
Is unlocking legal and safe?
It is a fair question — the category has earned its reputation online. Here is the honest version.
LEGAL IN usa
It is legal, and the CRTC says so
Unlocking a phone you own is lawful here, and since 2017 the CRTC has required carriers to unlock devices on request at no charge. Our role is doing it for you in person — when the carrier route is slow, when the phone is second-hand, or when you are no longer with the carrier that locked it.
PROOF OF OWNERSHIP
We ask whose phone it is
That is not friction, it is the reason this is legitimate. A shop that unlocks anything handed across the counter is the shop you should worry about. Bring proof the phone is yours and the rest is straightforward.
WARRANTY
Your warranty is not affected
Unlocking does not void a manufacturer warranty. Some carriers will not provide support for a device unlocked outside their own process, which is a different thing from your warranty ending.
IN PERSON
Nothing gets emailed to a stranger
The alternative is sending your IMEI and your money to a website and waiting. Here the device is checked in front of you, and if it cannot be unlocked you are told at the counter — before you have paid, not after.
Find out what is possible — before you pay.
Tell us the device and what it is doing — locked to a carrier, asking for an Apple ID, stuck on a Google sign-in, or stuck behind a passcode. We will tell you what is possible before anything is charged.

Unlocking by device
Which lock you are dealing with depends on who made the phone, because Apple and Google protect devices in different ways.
DEVICE
CARRIER LOCK
ACCOUNT LOCK
iPhone
Apple runs two separate locks and people mix them up constantly. Carrier lock lives in Apple’s own database — check yours under Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. Activation Lock is the Apple ID tie and is a different problem entirely. Knowing which one you have is the first thing we establish
YES
Activation Lock
Samsung Galaxy
Two systems again, but Google’s rather than Apple’s: the carrier lock on the SIM, and Factory Reset Protection tied to the Google account. A second-hand Galaxy that boots to a Google sign-in is FRP, not a network lock.
YES
Google FRP
Google Pixel
The clearest case of the three, because FRP is Google’s own system on Google’s own hardware — the account that was signed in before the reset is the account the phone wants back.
YES
Google FRP
iPad
Cellular iPads carry a SIM and can be carrier-locked exactly like a phone, and Activation Lock applies to all of them. Worth checking before you sell or hand one on.
Cellular models
Activation Lock
Apple Watch
Activation Lock applies here too, which catches people out on a second-hand Watch.
No SIM
Activation Lock
iPod
Still serviced at the bench.

fREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is cell phone unlocking?
Cell phone unlocking removes a carrier restriction that prevents a compatible phone from being used with another supported carrier. Once eligible and properly unlocked, the device may be able to work with compatible networks and SIM cards from other carriers.
Why would I need to unlock my phone?
Unlocking can give you more flexibility when switching carriers, using a different SIM card, traveling, or choosing a new mobile service provider. Eligibility and compatibility depend on your device and carrier.
How long does it take to unlock a phone?
The time required depends on the phone model, carrier, and type of unlocking service needed. Some compatible devices can be processed quickly, while others may require additional verification or carrier approval.
Can I unlock my phone myself or do I need a professional?
Some phones can be unlocked directly through the carrier when they meet the carrier’s requirements. If you’re unsure about your device or the unlocking process, our technicians can check the phone and explain the available options.
Will unlocking my phone void my warranty?
Unlocking a phone does not automatically mean that the warranty will be voided, but warranty terms can vary by manufacturer and carrier. We recommend checking your specific warranty terms before proceeding with any unlocking service.
